In the original version, Eliot's draft reads(italics mine):
"...ahead among the mountains..."
This version was changed by Pound to read "above among the mountains"(V. Eliot 71), and Eliot kept this change because this wording emphasizes how far away and out of reach the desired water is... it is not ahead, but above, again teasing the speaker with its distance.
