"Of thunder of spring over distant mountains"
The original version reads here, "Of thunder of spring over the mountains."(V. Eliot 71). This was changed to read "distant,"(V. Eliot 71) to emphasise the fact that this spring is very far away, and thus can only tease the speaker with its faint thunder.
