Ode to the decay of London
In the first draft of this section, this stanza was the last one of part III, and had a stanza following it that talked of the "phantasmal goblins"(V. Eliot 37) that bound London's people upon a wheel. This stanza was heavily edited by Vivian Eliot, to the point where there was very little left of it, whereupon, Eliot seems to have decided to completely rewrite the last stanza in his second draft, and came up with:
"The river sweats
Oil and tar..." (Eliot 266-7).
This version is the same as the final version, with just a little editing of the syllables that the River-daughters sing.
