The end of this section
In the first draft of this section, there were seven stanzas preceding those about Phlebas, discussing the lot of a sailor, and a sailor's chosen amusements. Pound edited this section heavily, crossing out large portions of text, so Eliot chose to remove the first part entirely. He chose to focus instead on Phlebas, and the way in which he is aged and regresses in age on the wheel of the whirlpool.
