In the first two drafts, this section was an entire stanza, and read as:
"-Bestows one final patronising kiss,
And gropes his way, fiding the stairs unlit;
And at the corner where the stable is,
Delays only to urinate, and spit."(V. Eliot 47).
Pound found this section to be "probaly(sic) over the mark,"(V.Eliot 45) and Eliot agreed that he had made the clerk too disgusting, for it was deleted from the final draft.
